A: Parkinson's disease, according to traditional Tibetan medicine, is a disorder in the nerve connected with the brain, which is the central nervous system in the Western system of medicine. I cannot here describe the derivations of the different nervous systems since it is very complicated and related to the Tantric system of Buddhism. There are quite a few different types of disease: hot and cold are general types, and specific types include areas affecting the head and the four extremities. Symptoms are dizziness, loss of concentration, trembling in the hands and legs, sleeplessness, and inability to bear loud noises. Stiffness of the limbs and slowness of movement, loss of sensation and feeling , swelling in the body, and impaired balance, are some of the symptoms shown by affected people. I am not sure whether I can say there is a cure for Parkinsons's disease in Tibetan medicine, but there is definitely treatment according to Tibetan medicine, depending on how chronic the case is. There are general herbal remedies like Samnor, Janchoe 37, Samkhung, Mutik 25, Ratna Samphel, Jumar 25, Agar 20, Dhali 16. In addition to these herbs, Tibetan doctors may prescribe different herbs according to her body constitution as treatment is always individualized in the traditional Tibetan medicine system. Therapeutic methods like moxabustion, blood letting, cupping, different types of massage and medicinal baths are used in treating the disease. Therefore, I suggest that you consult a senior doctor at the Tibetan Medical & Astrological Institute in Dharamsala, India, as I do not know if our doctors will visit Israel. You can get information about Tibetan doctors' possible future visits to Israel by writing to tmai@vsnl.com. Diets like raw garlic and onion, fish, pork, egg yolk, fried and oily foods are not recommended for the patient. Avoid sitting in the sun for too long or sitting in cold water. Avoid alcohol, smoking and strong coffee since it brings more stress and pressure on the nervous system. - Dr. Namgyal
