Q: My wife has arthritis and suffers pain in her shoulders and elbows. Are there any Tibetan medicines available that will help her?

A: The general cause of Arthritis according to traditional Tibetan medicine is from consuming too much oily food, and specially foods which are heavy and Water and Earth element dominant. Sitting too long in very damp and moist places can also aggravate it as it accumulates more dampness into our system. The above diet and behavior cause deterioration in our digestive fire and later cause indigestion therefore our system, instead of producing nutrients, produces more impurity in the blood and more serous fluid in our body. The impure blood and excess of serous fluid later settles in our joints, muscle or cartilage which ultimately becomes chronic and causes Arthritis. There are six different kinds of arthritis according to the Tibetan medical system.

The symptoms are usually severe pain in the joints or muscle wherever the arthritis is more dominant, dry and rough skin, oily face, pain in the hip or back, shivering, pain when moving, reddish color urine and pulse always beat fast, sunken and thin.

The diet and behavior regimen is considered very important in treating arthritis so avoid eating oily food, and foods that are earth and water element dominant. Foods like pork, coffee, tomatoes, green pepper, cucumber, potatoes, goat meat, raw onion and garlic, sour and sweet tasting food, raw food like salad should be consumed less. Fermented food and alcoholic drinks, sleeping during the day and foods which are salty and left for few days should be avoided. Rice, cows milk, yogurt and boiled water or boiled cold water and foods which are light should be consumed. Do not overwork, over exercise, don’t lift heavy things, do more light exercise which will put less pressure on your joints or muscle.

The best medicine for Arthritis is drinking more boiled water, consuming pomegranate, saffron, taking medicinal baths - these are some of the remedies that could be beneficial. There are pills like Letre-5, Sedu-5, Poekar-10, Samnor, Samkyung, Kyungna, etc. so I recommend you to consult a traditional Tibetan doctor as through mine and my senior doctors' experience, arthritis is one imbalance where Tibetan herbal medicines are very beneficial.
