Q: Is there an effective Tibetan Medicine to treat allergy to dust mites?

- Anonymous, Belgium

A:
Tibetan Medicine can treat allergies due to dust mites, food, pollution and other environmental causes, but first we try to find out the main causes of particular allergies. There may be immediate external or environmental causes or inner intrinsic causes. The intrinsic causes are determined by the balance of the three basic principles of energy in each individual. When these are in balance the person is healthy. If the balance is disturbed, disease and other health problems usually follow.

These three principles of energy, rLung, mTri-pa and badken, control all the body's main functions. It is not possible to make a direct translation as the Tibetan system of diagnosis and healing rests on fundamentally different principles. The "energies" are generally translated as wind (rLung) bile (mTri-pa) and phlegm (badken). Wind controls movement and bodily functions, such as circulation, breathing, also intellect, speech, and impulses. Bile relates to internal heat and controls digestion and assimilation of food, and basic metabolism. Phlegm maintains and regulates normal functioning and the balance of energies. This brief explanation cannot do justice to the full complexity of the system.

We also consider general physical energy and how well the body can protect against allergic reactions and infections. After the Tibetan physician has checked the above conditions thoroughly, then they will prescribe appropriate herbal medicines. However, these Tibetan herbal medicines are not available over the counter in most countries.
