Q: What are your recommendations for hepatitis C and where might I find herbal remedies in the U.S.?

- Tina, Florida

A:
There are 18 types of liver disease described in the Tibetan medical texts. They are divided into two major types, 13 hot types and 5 types of cold. Hepatitis C is similar to one of the hot liver conditions that we call mChen-nad Dembu. The basic cause of the disorder is an imbalance of the three humors and a problem with the blood.

Symptoms: in the early stages of hepatitis C infection, a patient often does not recognize what the condition is but may experience some or all of the following symptoms: lack of appetite, insomnia, tiredness, feeling heavy and sluggish in body and mind, weakness, becoming seriously underweight, constipated.

Tibetan science recommends the following food, beverage and behavior restrictions:

Always avoid any kind of spicy hot food or sour tastes, like lemon. Avoid strong alcohol or cold beer, canned food, greasy or oily food, rare meats. Do not sit a long time in the sun or in an over hot place.

Recommended intake:

Fully cooked beef, goat livers, carrots, moderate amounts of uncooked, cold food. All food or vegetables with a bitter taste are good. Keep moderately cool, not too hot or cold.

Medication: Natural Tibetan Medicine works well for jaundice and liver problems. You may be able to consult with a Tibetan doctor. See further information on Tibetan doctors on TibetMed and the web site on Tibetan Medical Clinics: http://dharma-haven.org/tibetan/medicine-clinics.htm.

Do not wait until your condition becomes chronic.

Dr. Namseling

PLEASE NOTE:

All questions have to be put into good English after they have been answered by our Tibetan doctor. The question on hepatitis C was posted in the original by mistake. This is the revised version of the answer. We decided to keep it posted for a second week.
