Q: Are there still doctors practicing and training in traditional Tibetan Medicine in Tibet?

- Ann, Rockville, Maryland

A:
Medical schools in Tibet have maintained their long tradition of training Tibetan medicine doctors. For example, the Lhasa Men-Tsee-Khang is one of the most famous Tibetan Medical Institutes in Tibet. It has its own Medical College, Pharmacy Department and Clinics. Each Department provides a comprehensive knowledge of Tibetan medicine practice along with theory. After training in theory students take courses to develop their skills in medical science. The Institute sends students to different clinics to practice with an experienced doctor.

After graduation, these doctors work in the clinics attached to the schools. Some doctors go on to practice Tibetan medicine in rural areas in Tibet.

For more information on training institutions for Tibetan Medicine, go to Medical Schools and Training
